Criminal Justice Degree News

September 10th, 2011 by admin

Criminal justice is not just an American concern; it is a worldwide issue. A multitude of persons are affected, both in criminal justice fields and outside of them. Due to this fact, any who are interested in a online criminal justice degree should stay abreast of current news growing career opportunities in that field.

International Criminal Justice News

The International Criminal Court (ICC), independent of similar United Nations programs, is considered by some to be the first permanent and treaty-based international court that has been established. It began on July 17, 1998 when 120 States agreed to adopt the Rome Statute, which is the legal basis for the establishment of an International Criminal Court.

The ICC conference began in Doha, Islam today. During the opening presentation, Qatar Emir highlighted the importance of fighting all crime and bringing all criminals to justice. He especially focused on genocide, war crimes, crimes of aggression, and crimes against humanity. He stated his belief that a strong stance on these issues is mandatory in order to maintain global stability and security.

Qatar Emir also has strong opinions about the role criminal justice plays in keeping peace around the globe. He announced that whether a criminal justice system is domestic or international, certain essential components should always be adhered to, namely the impartiality of those involved in the process and the equality according to the law that should be offered to all persons. The reason for his strong opinions on these matters relates to the current state of affairs within the Arab nations involving charging and prosecuting criminal acts.

 Domestic Criminal Justice News

There are many other news stories back on American soil. It is well known that there are many criminal justice schools that offer criminal justice degrees online and on campus. Recently, North Georgia College and State University (NGCSU) in Dahlonega launched a new graduate program in criminal justice that is only being offered online. The goal of this project is to give both new students and those who currently work in law enforcement or other similar fields to have the opportunity to further their education in a way that fits in with their schedules.

What sets this online criminal justice degree apart from others that could be deemed similar? According to Dr. Ross Alexander, the head of the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice, the difference is in the content. The online degree requires one course in global crime, and it also provides the option of taking electives in international affairs. This focus on global crime is not restricted to the online programs, though; Dr. Alexander states that the global crime component is what differentiates NGCSU master’s degrees in criminal justice from all other higher learning institutions in the state of Georgia.

The goal of implementing this online-only graduate work is to reach working professionals and those in the military. Persons in those situations find it difficult to attend a traditional campus due to occupational or familial obligations. Taking online courses provides such ones with the flexibility to complete coursework in their spare time while still providing the structure and accountability of a traditional graduate course. This new Master of Science in Criminal Justice degree was approved in April 2011 by the Board of Regents for the University System of Georgia.

North Georgia College and State University is not the only higher learning institution that has implemented programs for online criminal justice degrees. Walden University, which is already completely internet-based, is now offering two master’s degree programs; one is basic Criminal Justice, and the other is Criminal Justice Leadership. The basic online Criminal Justice Degree covers topics such as criminal behavior theory, human services, technology, homeland security, and management skills. The more specific Criminal Justice Leadership program is designed to help already experienced professionals to progress to roles within the field involving education, consultation, and executive management.

There are a number of specializations that students on either track can declare. These specialties include law and public policy, public management and leadership, emergency management, homeland security policies and coordination, and terrorism. This opportunity is an excellent one for those who already work in criminal justice fields that either wants to branch out and move to a different department or who love the department they are already in and want to rise up through promotions within that department. Whatever the case may be, it would not be wise to pass up these exceptional personal and professional growth opportunities.

People with criminal justice degrees serve in a very important capacity in today’s society. They are the ones who maintain peace, safety, and stability around the world. If you are interested in a career in that field, or you already have one and want to work towards qualifying for a promotion, consider an online criminal justice degree. It may be just the opportunity you need to reach your goal.

CIA Budget Cuts And How They Affect Online Criminal Justice Degrees

September 10th, 2011 by admin

Most people pursuing a criminal justice degree online are dedicated to bettering the world around them by using various branches of the criminal justice system to put criminals behind bars, or at least protect the public from them. Such a degree opens doors to careers in law enforcement, in forensic science, with Homeland Security, with the FBI, and with the CIA. Students considering such a criminal justice degree need to be aware of the global climate and what effects it might have on their post-grad job prospectus. Consider the CIA for example.

The Central Intelligence Agency, or CIA, is one of the most important agencies within the American government. They have received a multitude of accolades lately because of the successful killing of Osama bin Laden, and rightly so. Having an agency that focuses on gathering information, or intelligence, and informing the right people about that knowledge so that appropriate decisions can be made and actions be taken is a necessity for a government to maintain peace and security in a climate of global strife. Despite these facts, budget cuts are said to be on the horizon for the CIA, due to the reduction of national alert levels after bin Laden’s death. How does this news affect those pursuing criminal justice degrees? This article will address that exact question.

First, a discussion of the proposed budget cuts is in order. It is true that with the bin Laden threat finally over, the top terror target has been eliminated; this fact makes it seem as though it would be a logical decision to reduce the intelligence budget for the time being. Although leaders of the CIA disagree with that viewpoint, lawmakers have already started the ball rolling on budget cuts to offset the massive debt America is currently in.

Joan Dempsey, a former intelligence official at the Pentagon, is one of the more vocal advocates against these budget cuts. She notes that according to a recent report put out by the Intelligence and National Security Alliance, the last major budget cuts that took place in the States resulted in the 1998 al-Qaida strikes on US Embassies in Tanzania and Kenya. She states that is was, in fact, those budget cuts that allowed al-Qaeda to grow tremendously in power because the money for counter intelligence was simply not provided. Al-Qaeda’s strength was proven during the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. That tragic event proved the importance of adequate intelligence resources.

Current CIA Director, Leon Panetta, has worked tirelessly during his career to adhere to current budgets without sacrificing quality intelligence. He served as director of the Office of Management and Budget during the Clinton administration, which was a time of great economic growth; this growth was not the easiest thing to accomplish since former President Bush had accrued a great deal of national debt. The fact that Panetta worked on the national budget during this time of growth and wealth rebuilding shows that he has the credentials to manage resources even in times of few resources. He has proven over and over again that he has the credibility and capability to determine which military, intelligence, and defense spending areas are the most important, and which ones can afford a few cut backs. In July Panetta will become the head of the Pentagon, where hopefully he can offset the upcoming budget cuts with wise decisions and careful planning.

What do all these cuts mean for criminal justice students? It means that it will be that much harder to get a job with the CIA. If resources are depleted, that obviously means that fewer employee salaries and benefits can be paid. If a professional already working for the CIA wants to earn promotions, they may be more difficult to attain. There is hope, though. It has been suggested that as soon as students receive their chosen degree in the criminal justice field, they start applying immediately for CIA positions, if that is what they desire. Networking is also very important; try to get to know officials and legislators who can help you learn about the field. For those already employed, one suggestion is to start working on an online criminal justice degree, perhaps even one that focuses on leadership and management so as to earn more credentials for promotion. By going for criminal justice degrees online, students are still able to acquire valuable experience while preparing for more of a leadership role.

In a country that is struggling with national debt and scrounging to find areas to cut back on spending, it is imperative that upcoming college students, or even those already in the workforce that are looking for better opportunities, get degrees in fields that are guaranteed to have jobs available by the time they graduate. Those with a Bachelors in Criminal Justice  give access to jobs in a variety of fields; the CIA might not be hiring, but plenty of other law enforcement agencies will, so those interested should not give up on their career goals.
